Samuel Masham, 1st Baron Masham

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Samuel Masham, 1st Baron Masham (* 1678/79 in High Laver, Essex ; † February 2, 1758 ), was a British nobleman and courtier .

He was a younger son of the House of Commons Sir Francis Masham, 3rd Baronet (1646-1723) from his marriage to Mary Scott and was born on the estate of the Otes House family at High Laver in Essex.

He came to the English royal court as a page for Prince George of Denmark , the husband of the future Queen Anne . In 1701 he became its "stable master" ( Equerry ), that is, his personal assistant.

In 1707 he married Lady Abigail Hill († 1734), a lady-in-waiting and favorite of the Queen.

In the following years he was raised to the rank of Brigadier General in the British Army . In 1710 he was elected as a member of the House of Commons , first for the constituency of Ilchester and in 1711 for the constituency of Windsor . From 1711 to 1714 he held the court office of the Cofferer of the Household . On January 1, 1712 Queen Anne raised him as Baron Masham , of Otes, to hereditary peer , whereby he became a member of the House of Lords and left the House of Commons.

After the death of Queen Anne he received in 1716 by King George I the office of King's Remembrancer , which he held until his death. When his father died in 1723, his older brothers had also died without male descendants, so that he inherited his possessions and the title of 4th Baronet , of High Lever in the County of Essex.

From his marriage he left a son Samuel Masham (1712-1776), who inherited him on his death in 1758.
