Stocking knitter's chair of a similar design, as Samuel Uhlig may have used

Samuel Uhlig (born January 26, 1672 , † March 6, 1743 ) was a German stocking maker in Oberlungwitz . He was the first to use a hand-held chair for stocking production and is therefore considered to be the founder of the later stocking industry in Oberlungwitz.

Life

Samuel Uhlig worked as a farmer, stocking maker, linen dealer and judge in Abtei, a small town that is now part of Oberlungwitz. He also worked as an organist in the Abbey church and as an organ builder. His son Samuel Uhlig (II) and his grandson Johann Emanuel Samuel Uhlig (JESU) also worked as stocking weavers and organists.

A positive , designed and built by Samuel Uhlig, was used in the Abtei church until 1745.

In 1731 Samuel Uhlig set up the first handcraft chair in Abtei (Oberlungwitz) and thus became the town's first stocking maker. It was probably a wooden replica of a hand-knitting chair by William Lee . Some sources name his grandson Johann Emanuel Samuel Uhlig as the first user of a hand-held chair. This cannot be the case, however, as Johann Emanuel Samuel Uhlig was only born in 1749 - the error probably goes back to the similarity of names between the two. In the novel “ You Yourself Are the Wheel ” by Eberhard Frowein and its film adaptation “ You and I ” (1937, director Wolfgang Liebeneiner ), Johann Emanuel Samuel Uhlig is the focus. The historical facts are treated very freely.
