Samuel Widdowson

Samuel Widdowson (born April 16, 1851 in Hucknall, Nottinghamshire , † May 9, 1927 in Beeston, Nottinghamshire) was an English football player and official.

career

Widdowson played for Nottingham Forest , of which he was chairman between 1879 and 1884. On August 13, 1880, he played his only international match for England against Scotland .

Widdowson introduced some innovations in football. In 1874 he invented the shin guards when he cut appropriate parts out of cricket protective clothing and wore them outside the socks. In the same year he had the patent registered. He also initiated the referee's whistle (previously the referee used flag signals), goal nets and floodlights. However, his idea of ​​using gas lamps as floodlights failed due to safety concerns and the lack of gas.
