San'an Optoelectronics Co. Ltd. is a company in the semiconductor industry in the People's Republic of China . It is the largest manufacturer of light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in the country (market share 2013: 29%) and one of the largest in the world (world market share in 2014 around 5%). The activities cover three business areas:
- Electronics Technology Research (research and development in the fields of LED and solar energy ),
- Semiconductors Production (production of LED microchips, RF chips for cell phones, wafers , solar cells , photodiodes ),
- Marketing.
The company, which was founded on March 27, 1993 and is based in Xiamen , has been headed by CEO Zhiqiang Lin since 2017, employs around 6,700 people and generates sales of around $ 600 million. The market capitalization was in July 2014 at 5.2 billion dollars. In 2018 at $ 13.3 billion. In addition to the Xiamen Special Economic Zone, there are production facilities in Tianjin , Wuhu and Quanzhou, among others . Aixtron is an important supplier of production systems in Germany .
In November 2012, San'an acquired a 19.9% stake in the second largest Taiwanese LED manufacturer Formosa Epitaxy (Forepi). After the takeover of Forepi by the Taiwanese competitor Epistar in 2014, which made Epistar the world market leader, San'an exchanged his shares for a stake in Epistar corresponding to 3.05%. This was sold in September 2017.
