The Shanghai – Wusong railway line or the Songhu Railway ( long淞滬 鐵路; short淞沪 铁路; Pinyin Sōng – Hù Tiělù, from Wusong and Hù Dú, an old name for the Suzhou River ) was an approximately 15 km long standard gauge railway from Shanghai to Woosung in China .
history
The railway line was opened on September 1, 1898. It ran from the Old North Railway Station in the Zhabei District of Shanghai and Woosung in the Baoshan District of Shanghai.
It essentially ran on the route of the earlier narrow-gauge Wusung Railway . This was sold in 1876 by the original foreign owners, in particular the British company Jardine, Matheson, & Company , and mined for reuse in the Taiwanese coal mining areas. Sheng Xuanhuai built a new railroad along the old route, but the terminus was rebuilt a few blocks away. The line has also been extended to the center of Woosung, with some new stations being opened.
The route was badly damaged during the Second World War. It was eventually used as part of Line 3 of the Shanghai Metro . The former North Station is now used as the Shanghai Railway Museum , and a memorial was erected at the former Songbin Road Station .
