San Giacomo degli Spagnoli

The church of San Giacomo degli Spagnoli ("Saint Jacob the Spaniard ") in Naples is dedicated to Saint James the Elder and is located in Piazza Municipio. During the rule of the Spanish viceroys over Naples , it was one of the most important churches for the Spanish residents of the city.

It was built in 1540 by Don Pedro Álvarez de Toledo and the Royal Brotherhood of Spanish Nobles of Santiago ( Real Hermandad de Nobles Espanioles de Santiago ). The facade, designed by Ferdinando Manlio , was removed in 1825 when the church was incorporated into the Palazzo dei Ministeri (now the Palazzo San Giacomo, seat of the City of Naples). It was attached to the Hospitium of Spanish soldiers and primarily intended as a church for the Spanish nobles - one reason why many of them have found their final resting place here. On April 26, 1911, she was awarded by Pope X. Pius the honorary title of a papal minor Basilica .

Although the church has undergone numerous restorations, the interior has retained its sixteenth-century appearance: it has three naves , the aisles of which are covered with domes . The main dome rises in the crossing between the main and transept towards the apse and highlights the tomb of Don Pedro Álvarez de Toledos with the allegorical statues of the viceroy Don Pedro de Toledo by Giovanni da Nola . However, the tomb did not contain either the body of Don Pedro or that of his wife, as Don Pedro himself died in Florence .

In addition to the tomb for Don Pedro de Toledo, the church has works by Marco Pino , Vaccaro, Bernardo Lama, Michele Curia, Pietro Bardellino , Domenico Antonio and Luca Giordano .
