Notes on notation in Portuguese
In old Portuguese, Saint Jacob was still a Sant 'Iago as an apostrophized assimilation of the "o" from Sant o Iago to the subsequent "I" of the I ago . In the 18th century, the language used by the (predominantly illiterate) population made it a San Tiago , i.e. the "T" was ascribed to the "Iago". Obediently applying the rule:
- Santo before vowel (e.g. Santo Antão )
- São before consonant (e.g. São Vicente )
the clerks made a São Tiago out of it. At the beginning of the 20th century, Santiago established itself as the official spelling.
Variants:
The Californian city of San Diego has the same origin by name as Santiago . The history of the naming goes back to San Diego de Alcalá .
