Ruben Santiago-Hudson (born November 24, 1956 in Lackawanna , New York ) is an American actor .

Life

Private life

Ruben Santiago-Hudson was born in Lackawanna , New York , in 1956 to Alean Hudson and Ruben Santiago, a railroad worker. His father was Puerto Rican and his mother was African American . He attended Lackawanna High School and received his bachelor's degree from Binghamton University and his master's degree from Wayne State University .

He is married to Jeannie Brittan and has two children from a previous relationship.

Career

Ruben's first film appearance was in 1988 in the comedy The Prince of Zamunda alongside Eddie Murphy . This was followed by some guest appearances on various television series such as Alles Okay, Corky? , My dear John , New York Cops - NYPD Blue , Gargoyles - On the Wings of Justice and New York Undercover . From 1997 to 1999 he voiced the character Jess Chapel in the animation series Spawn . 1999 was followed by a guest appearance in The West Wing - In the Center of Power and in Third Watch - Operation at the Limit . In 2001 he wrote the autobiographical play Lackawanna Blues , which was adapted as a television film by HBO in 2005 . The adaptation earned him a Humanitas Prize , a Christopher Award , as well as a nomination for the Writers Guild of America and the Emmy .

On Broadway , he starred in the musical Jelly’s Last Jam and in the drama Seven Guitars directed by August Wilson . The latter earned him the 1996 Tony Award for Best Supporting Actor .

From 2009 to 2011 he served as Captain Roy Montgomery in the ABC - crime series Castle next to Nathan Fillion and Stana Katić seen. 2013 he had a starring role as Charles Dawson in the first and only season of the AMC series Low Winter Sun .
