Sonia Santiago

Sonia Santiago (born November 1, 1966 in Madrid ) is a German-Spanish dancer , dance teacher and ballet master .

Sonia Santiago-Brückner grew up in Germany and started dancing ballet at the age of five. She then began her ballet training at the John Cranko School and graduated there in 1985. After engagements at the Saarland State Theater in Saarbrücken and as a semi-soloist at the Lower Saxony State Theater in Hanover (choreographies by Pierre Dobrievitch, Lothar Höfgen, Jochen Ulrich and Tom Schilling), she came in 1990 to the Stuttgart Ballet. There she was appointed soloist in 1994 and principal soloist in 1997.

Her repertoire included solo roles from various classical and modern choreographies, many of which were specially designed for her. Choreographers who have created roles for Sonia Santiago are: David Bintley, Ivan Cavallari, Douglas Lee, Roberto de Oliveira, Marco Santi, Christian Spuck , Stephan Thoss and Renato Zanella . She danced in productions by choreographers such as Maurice Béjart , Mauro Bigonzetti , Nacho Duato , William Forsythe , Marcia Haydée , Jiří Kylián , Uwe Scholz , Glen Tetley and Hans van Manen . The last major roles in her repertoire were the Queen of the Night in Maurice Béjart's "Magic Flute", Queen Isabella in "Edward II." by David Bintley, Tatjana and Katharina in the ballets “Onegin” and “The Taming of the Shrew”, by John Cranko and Marguerite in John Neumeier's “Lady of the Camellias”.

Sonia Santiago-Brückner has been working as a freelance ballet master, dance teacher and dancer since 2001. She regularly gives classical training at various ballet schools in and around Stuttgart. In addition, she is active in various projects, such as:

  • 2006–2009: Choreographic assistant and trainer for the dance projects "Move the Music" and "Lord of the Rings" by Lior Lev for students from the Stuttgart area.
  • 2007/2008: Dancer in "Inkheart" in the role of "Resa" in the Schauspielhaus der Staatstheater Stuttgart
  • 2009: IMPULS project of the Junge Oper Stuttgart (Orphée et Euridice).
  • 2010: Dancer in the German-Turkish opera “Gegen die Wand” as the alter ego of “Sibel”, Junge Oper Stuttgart. The opera received the Faust Prize of the German Theater in 2011.
  • 2011: Artistic director of the youth project “Move it!” For the 50th anniversary of the Stuttgart Ballet.
  • Dance teacher in many other projects with children and young people in all types of schools in the Stuttgart area and beyond.
