Cirio H. Santiago

Cirio H. Santiago (born January 18, 1936 in Manila , † September 26, 2008 in Makati City , Metro Manila ) was a Filipino film director , film producer and screenwriter .

biography

In 1960 he was voted one of the "Ten Outstanding Young Men" (TOYM) in the Philippines. He then began a career as a director and producer in the Filipino film industry .

His more famous films included Fly Me (1973) and TNT Jackson (1975). In the 1980s, he was a producer or director of low-budget films about the Vietnam War , working with US producers Roger Corman and directors Jonathan Demme , Joe Dante and Carl Franklin . In 1993 the film Firehawk followed . Nonetheless, many of these B-movies became cult films that were also respected by well-known US directors such as Quentin Tarantino and who also met Santiago and the director Eddie Romero during a stay in the Philippines in 2007 . Tarantino explained that some of the characters in his film Kill Bill - Volume 1 were based on those from Santiago's early films.

Cirio Santiago, who also shot films under the name "Leonard Hermes", was chairman of the film production company Premiere Productions and in 1995 president of the Philippine Film Development Fund.

At the time of his death, he was busy shooting the film Road Raiders , which was produced by the US company 147 Productions and which was intended as a sequel to the science fiction film Stryker . It was also chairman of the Santiago lakes -Entwicklungsgesellschaft of Laguna (Laguna Lake Development Authority).

After his death, he was posthumously awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Filipino Film Academy (Film Academy of the Philippines) in October 2008.
