Claude Santiago

Claude Santiago (* 1950 in Algeria ; † January 16, 2012 in Paris ) was a French documentary filmmaker .

Life

Claude Santiago had Spanish roots and made his first film in 1968 at the age of 18 about a debate between Jean-Paul Sartre and a group of students. For the following decade he lived in Canada and California. In San Francisco he worked as a DJ and program designer at Club Earl's . After he discovered video art for himself, he took part in the film project Picnic TV of the channel Canal + on his return to France in 1984 . In the following years he made a number of music documentaries about artists such as Carlinhos Brown , James Blood Ulmer , The Last Poets , Tom Zé and Compay Segundo . Santiago died of cancer in early 2012.
