San Giuseppe dei Falegnami ( Latin : Sancti Iosephi Fabrorum Lignariorum "Church of Saint Joseph the patron saint of carpenters ") is a church in Rome , in the Rione Campitelli , at the Clivus Argentarius at the Roman Forum . It was built over the Mamertine dungeon . She has been the title diaconate of the Roman Catholic Church since 2012 .

As early as the 4th century, a place of worship was created in the dungeon, from which the Church of San Pietro in Carcere developed. In 1540 the carpenters' guild (Italian: Congregazione dei Falegnami) acquired this church. In 1597 she began work on the new church dedicated to her patron Joseph , which was completed in 1663. The church was restored in 1886 and a new apse was added.

Today, the facade is raised compared to street level, because during the work of the 1930s the adjacent square was lowered in order to gain access to the dungeon below.

The interior consists of a nave with two side chapels each. The furnishings date from the 19th century. One of the most important works is the Nativity of Christ by Carlo Maratta (1651).

An oratory with a beautiful wooden ceiling is attached to the church. In addition, the Cappella del Crocifisso , which dates from the 16th century, is inserted between the floor of the church and the vault of the Mamertine dungeon.

On August 30, 2018, part of the roof over the main nave collapsed. The church was closed to the public at this time. The art-historical loss is a wooden ceiling of extraordinary quality from around 1700. The Roman public prosecutor's office is investigating criminal construction defects, as the roof and facade of the church were only restored in 2015.
