The Iglesia de San Jorge is a Roman Catholic church in Santa Cruz de Tenerife . It was as Anglican Church Church of Saint George built.

history

In 1890 the Church of England set up a chaplaincy in Santa Cruz de Tenerife in order to be able to offer services in the rooms of the consulate to British people living in the city and those in transit, at least in winter. A year later, donations began to be collected for the construction of a church. The design for the new building came from the architect Walter I. Word, who had also drawn up the plans for the construction of the Anglican Church in Puerto de la Cruz . On June 22, 1897, the day of Queen Victoria's 60th jubilee , the foundation stone for the Church of Saint George was laid on a plot of land at today's Plaza de 25 de Julio . On December 21, 1905, the church was provisionally opened with a service. The completion and consecration took place in March 1914.

By 1989, the Church of England's Church of England in Santa Cruz had become so numbered that there was no congregation left to use and maintain the building. The church was therefore sold to the Catholic diocese of San Cristóbal de la Laguna . After a renovation and minor adjustments to the other liturgy , the church was consecrated on September 23, 1993 by Bishop Felipe Fernández García . On the eve of July 25, 1997, an ecumenical service was held in the church by the Catholic and an Anglican bishop in memory of the dead on July 25, 1797 .

building

The building, which is surrounded by a garden area, has the shape of a Latin cross without a crossing . The walls are made of natural stones, which are plastered in the interior. Windows and doors have pointed arches. The church has no tower and has only had a cross on the facade since it was converted into a Catholic church. The main nave is slightly wider than the sanctuary, from which it is separated by a pointed arch . The beams of the gable roof are visible from the inside. There is an organ in the left transept.
