San Lázaro is a district in the Department of Concepción in Paraguay . It is located on the Río Paraguay in the west and on the Río Apa in the north, which forms the border with Brazil . It consists of the districts of San Lázaro with 1050 inhabitants and Vallemí , 6 km further south, with 8600 inhabitants.

history

The district of San Lázaro was founded on December 17, 1930 by Don Lázaro Aranda, a Uruguayan captain, the district of Vallemí in 1949. In 1956, the community was elevated to a district. In 1949, a cement factory was established in Vallemí, but it stopped production in 1968. As a result, Paraguay had to import cement from neighboring countries and Europe. In 1976 the factory was taken over by the state and production started again.

economy

Vallemí is an industrial city. There are numerous quarries that quarry limestone and marble. In October 2016, the Italian company Colacem invested US $ 220 million in Vallemí to transform the Industria Nacional de Cemento cement factory into the largest in the country.

tourism

In addition to cement production, tourism plays a certain economic role. In San Lázaro there are several stalactite caves, four of which can be visited by visitors. The most famous is the Santa Caverna (Sacred Cave) - so named because a stalagmite resembles a statue of the Virgin Mary. Another cave, called Homer Simpson , has a formation that looks like the face of this cartoon character. San Lázaro can also be reached twice a week from the city of Concepción with the river boats Aquidabán and Dalmata on the Río Paraguay.
