San Leonardo da Porto Maurizio ad Acilia is the Roman Catholic parish church of the same parish in the southwestern direction Ostia nearby Roman outskirts Acilia in Municipio Roma X (Via Ludovico Antomelli 1).

Since 2016 it has been titular church of the Cardinal Priest of San Leonardo da Porto Maurizio ad Acilia . The current title holder, Sebastian Koto Cardinal Khoarai, has not officially taken possession of it to this day, as he is staying in his home country Lesotho for reasons of age.

The church is named after the Italian saint Franciscan Leonhard von Porto Maurizio (1676–1751).

history

The church is considered the mother church of the suburb Acilia. The first inhabitants of the suburb were resettled in 1913 from the area of ​​the Centro Storico because of archaeological excavations on the previously undeveloped site of the Ager Romanus . The parish church was built in 1936 by the architect Francesco Fornari in a stripped - down neo-Romanesque style. In the same year the parish was founded, which has been looked after by the Franciscan Minorites ever since . On November 30, 1980 she was visited by Pope John Paul II . It was elevated to the title Church on November 19, 2016 by Pope Francis .
