The San Luis Rey River is a 88 km long river in northern San Diego County , California . The San Luis Rey River rises in the Cleveland National Forest and also crosses it in its upper reaches. Near Warner Springs on the upper reaches, the San Luis Rey River is dammed to Lake Henshaw . In the north of Oceanside it finally flows into the Pacific . The last 11 kilometers the river flows in a 120 m wide canal. It drains an area of 1456 km². Most of the time the river carries very little water. Increasing urbanization, mining and agriculture have caused significant deterioration in the river's water quality.
