San Marcial de Rubicón
The Ermita de San Marcial del Rubicón , also Ermita de San Marcial de Limoges , is a Catholic church in Femés on the island of Lanzarote, which belongs to Spain .
history
In the church there is an image of the patron saint of the island and the diocese of Canary Islands , Saint Martial of Limoges . This makes the church a place of pilgrimage.
The original church, the Catedral de San Marcial de Limoges , originally stood on the coast and was the first cathedral of the Rubicón diocese . There she was repeatedly exposed to pirate attacks. In 1483 the diocese was moved to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and named Diócesis Canariense-Rubicense . The church building was later rebuilt at a higher point and today stands around 350 meters above sea level below the Atalaya de Femés mountain .
At the time of the great volcanic eruptions on Lanzarote, the church was a place of refuge from 1730 to 1736. At times there was also a sanatorium and an orphanage for children in the buildings.
On February 25, 1730 Don Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo became pastor of the church in Fémes. He wrote a chronicle of the island's volcanic eruptions in the 18th century.
