Don Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo (* unknown; † probably 1772 in Haría , Lanzarote ) was a Spanish , Catholic clergyman on the Canary Island of Lanzarote in the 18th century . From 1730 to 1736 he kept a detailed chronicle of the volcanic eruptions that the island experienced during this period.

Life

Yaiza Church, Lanzarote

The date of birth of Curbelos is not known. According to his will, he was the son of Don Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo and his second wife Doña Juana Perdomo. On February 25, 1730 Curbelo was first pastor of the Iglesia de San Marcial de Rubicón in Femés on Lanzarote. After taking office, Curbelo distinguished himself through social commitment and founded a cross-community poor relief organization. In the same year, Bishop Félix Bernuy Zapata y Mendoza also assigned him the parish of the parish of Yaiza , the southernmost of the seven parishes on Lanzarote, and appointed him parish administrator of the diocese of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . Bishop Zapata died shortly after the appointment on May 23, 1730, but the diocese confirmed Curbelo on July 21, 1730 in office. The volcanic eruptions began on September 1st of that year. Curbelo asked to be released from his ministry and to leave the island. The former was denied him, but in mid-April 1731 he received permission to leave the island temporarily. However, he did not make use of this until January 25, 1732 and, like many other islanders before, withdrew to a neighboring island, probably Gran Canaria. He returned to Yaiza in early May 1732. The volcanic activity continued for several years.

On March 9, 1736, Curbelo moved to the northern parish of Haría as a pastor, where he was also the episcopal vicar for Lanzarote and notary of the holy office of the Inquisition from 1749 . According to the first book of the Haría Regulations, Curbelo served the community for 36 years. From this information, the year 1772 can be derived as the date of death.

In 1730 Don Andrés Lorenzo Curbelo was pastor in Yaiza. He experienced the volcanic eruptions that plagued the island for years, with the exception of about three months as an eyewitness and kept a diary of the eruptions and their consequences, probably initially in the form of notes. In 1744 he made a complete work from these notes, which he dedicated to Juan Francisco Guillén Isso , Bishop of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and later Archbishop of Burgos .

In 1814 the German geologist Leopold von Buch visited the Canary Islands, discovered the clergyman's chronicle on Tenerife and made copies of the most important passages. The original is now lost, but the copies of the extracts have been preserved in a lecture by Buchs and were later incorporated into his monograph on the geology of the Canary Islands.

Some details from Curbelo's chronicle contain information, especially with regard to times, which do not correspond to various letters and documents of the church and government that have survived. According to his report, the eruptions ended in April 1736, and according to files of the island administration probably as early as May 1735. Nevertheless, Curbelo's chronicle is considered the most accurate contemporary description of the eruptions on Lanzarote in the 18th century.
