Femés is a village in the South to Spain belonging Canary Island of Lanzarote . It belongs to the municipality of Yaiza and has 243 inhabitants (2011).

history

The village was created thanks to the Iglesia de San Marcial de Rubicón . This church was located too close to the coast in the Rubicón Plain, so that it could no longer be protected against pirate attacks in the 15th century. It was rebuilt about 350 meters higher, on the Los Ajaches mountain range , at the end of the Valle del Pozo . Onions and potatoes are still grown in this valley today. To the north of it rises the second highest mountain of Lanzarote at 608 meters, the Atalaya de Femés .

The pilgrimage church, which is now glistening white, is adorned by two entrance portals made of reddish volcanic stone . Long neglected, it was rediscovered and consecrated in 1733 after a visit by Bishop Don Pedro Manuel D'Avila y Cardenas , to whom a stone tablet on the south portal commemorates. During the Timanfaya volcanic eruptions , a new statue of San Marcial , the patron saint and first bishop of Lanzarote, was purchased for the church and a pilgrims' hostel was built next to him.

The present-day village emerged, the inhabitants of which lived for a long time from breeding goats and making goat cheese ( Queso de Cabra ). Now the main source of income is tourism here too. Femés is also known as the Rubicón's balcony because it offers a wide view of the Rubicón plain in the south of Lanzarote as far as the neighboring islands of Lobos and Fuerteventura .

In honor of San Marcial , a big festival is always held in Femés on July 7th. It is the largest religious celebration in Lanzarote that lasts several days with a procession, magic booths, dance and music in the church square.
