San Nicolas (ship)

The San Nicolas was built in 1888 for the Hamburg South American Steamship Company (HSDG), Hamburg Süd for short , operated for this shipping company in the South American service, was sold to the Woerman Line in 1896 and ran aground in Liberia in 1898.

history

The shipyard was the Reiherstieg Schiffswerfte und Maschinenfabrik AG in Hamburg ( Reiherstieg shipyard ), it was launched here in August 1888 as construction number 369 and on October 28, 1888 it was delivered to Hamburg-Süd. The San Nicolas was measured with a length of 99 meters and a width of 12 meters with 2,600 GRT, was powered by a steam engine with three cylinders and ran 11 to 12 knots with 1,550 hp. The steam engine and almost all auxiliary machines and winches were built in the machine factory of the Reiherstieg shipyard. The ship was set up for 250 passengers in the intermediate deck and 40 passengers in the 1st class.

The San Nicolas was used on the maiden voyage in the liner service between Hamburg and Argentina, which she provided until 1896. The shipping company Afrikanische Dampfschiffs-Actiengesellschaft Woermann-Linie took over the San Nicolas in July 1896, she was used as Lothar Bohlen in the freight line service to the German colonies in Africa. The Lothar Bohlen ran aground on 28 May 1898 the trip from Hamburg to Accra on Cape Palmas in Liberia.

This ship name San Nicolas can also be found later on the ships of Hamburg Süd, for example the San Nicolas (II) with 4,739 GRT was delivered to Hamburg Süd by Blohm & Voss in 1897 .

The name was later supplemented with the addition of CAP and the Cap San Nicolas (I) was the first in a series of six ships in 1961 that were considered to be the most beautiful liner freighters on this route to South America. One ship in this series, the Cap San Diego , has been preserved and is moored in Hamburg as a museum ship at the Überseebrücke.

The container ship Cap San Nicolas (IMO number: 9215660) was built in 2001 by the shipyard Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. delivered in Goeje (South Korea) under construction number 1329. It is managed by the Hamburg-Süd subsidiary Columbus Shipmanagement GmbH, Hamburg, sails under the Liberian flag and can load around 3,800 standard containers. With a length of 257 meters, width of 32.20 meters, side height of 19.30 meters and draft of 9.8 meters, it is measured at around 40,000 GRT and has a load capacity of 50,200 dwt.
