San Pietro in Mavino , also San Pietro in Mavinas , is a small church in the Lombardy municipality of Sirmione on Lake Garda . It is known for its fresco decoration . Although mostly overlooked, it is considered to be one of the prettiest churches on Lake Garda.

Location and naming

The church is located north of Sirmione about halfway between the center of Sirmione and the Grottoes of Catullus . Its isolated location in the middle of olive and cypress groves means that only a few visitors notice it. It lies on the second elevation of the headland , which pushes north into Lake Garda. From the beginning, she received her patronage from St. Peter . The nickname in Mavino comes from a slurping of the Latin name in summas vineas , which refers to the vineyards that were once located here .

Building history

The small building is possibly on the remains of an ancient sanctuary. A previous building was built in the 8th century, with its original T-shaped floor plan related to the construction of the Santa Giustina abbey church in Sezzadio in Piedmont . The current building dates back to the 11th century and was expanded to today's hall church around 1320 , the original impression of the room from the early Romanesque was destroyed.

Exterior and campanile

The facade, which is undecorated except for the partially and irregular corner blocks, is broken up above the portal with a small rectangular window only by two arched windows in the middle and one round window below the gable end. The extension on the left is much younger, dating from the 19th century. The campanile with the pyramid-shaped spire was built around 1070.

Interior and frescoes

The interior is a hall church without vaults, the roof structure is freely visible. The middle main apse contains the fresco Majestas Domini with saints , according to another reading Majestas Domini with the Last Judgment . The left side apse contains a Madonna enthroned , the right the depiction of the crucifixion of Christ . All of the frescoes in the apses date from the late 13th century, the artist or artists are unknown.

In the church there is still a fresco, which is very rare in this form, with a representation of the Archangel Michael with saints . The archangel is unusually shown from the front. The work is younger than the apsidal frescoes; the style of the work belongs to the late Gothic period , around 1475. The church contains other frescoes from different centuries, but none younger than the late Gothic frescoes.

The church was thoroughly and successfully restored in the 1980s.
