history

In 1320 the Free Imperial City of Biberach took over the Hospital of the Holy Spirit , the richest and oldest hospital in the city. It was also a poor, madhouse, orphanage, a refuge for elderly maids, bedridden sick people, needy women who have recently given birth, and single benefactors. The management of the predominantly female staff was made up of an infirmary for the sick, a child mother for those who had recently given birth and a fool mother for the mentally confused. The citizens of the city were entitled to use the services of the hospital. Strangers were only looked after for a short time. A first hospital doctor can be found in the documents in 1345. Johann Swende (1466) and Ulrich Ellenbog (1435–1499) were later mentioned by name as “Doctors of the seven liberal arts of medicine” .

Since 1649 the hospital's staff has been equally staffed. Until 1873, the city's hospital was housed in the premises of the old hospital. The male hospital was in the north-east building, the female hospital in the north-west building, which is now the Braith Mali Museum . From 1873 to 1907, the Red House with 51 beds on Waldseer Strasse served as the district hospital.

In 1907 the current location was moved to on the Gigelberg . This building wing from 1907 is still in operation today as part of the hospital. In 1938 the district hospital became the district hospital.

After the Second World War, the hospital was continuously expanded and stocked.

In 2002 the supporting company Kliniken Landkreis Biberach GmbH was founded, in 2013 it was renamed Sana Kliniken Landkreis Biberach GmbH after the takeover of 79.4% of the company shares.

New clinic building

When it was taken over by Sana AG , the plan was to build a new central hospital and to relocate the operation of the clinic there after completion. The investment volume for the project is around 100 million euros, of which 62.6 million euros come from funding from the state of Baden-Württemberg.

The official groundbreaking ceremony took place on March 1, 2018, and the topping-out ceremony was celebrated on July 12, 2019. The new clinic is being built on the future health campus on Hauderboschen, where the DRK rescue station, a dialysis center, the center for psychiatry and a medical center with several practices and health-related businesses will also be located. In order to promote the interlinking of outpatient and inpatient care and to ensure the shared use of the infrastructure, attention was paid to the placement and connection options of the individual buildings and areas when designing the health campus.

When planning the new clinic, the focus was on the best possible structural organization of the individual specialist and functional areas in order to guarantee short distances within the clinic and to simplify and promote interdisciplinary cooperation. The five-storey new building will have a total usable area of 16,800 m². Standard will be 2-bed rooms with their own bathroom, toilet, TV and WiFi; there will also be an optional service station with single rooms. 370 beds are planned, which can be increased to 410 beds if necessary. The clinic will be equipped with a helipad and a total of six operating theaters, two of which are specially designed for minimally invasive surgery and one for BG cases / accidents at work.
