The Hospital of the Holy Spirit in Biberach is mentioned first documented in 1258, today in the form of a foundation existing public institution for social protection of people in need in Biberach in Upper Swabia .
history
The basic idea of the hospital was the admission of pilgrims , traveling people, the poor, the sick, people with mental disabilities and orphans for “God's sake” and without regard to the person or origin. Founder of the hospital were the Stewards Otto Berchtold von Waldenburg and Walter von Warthausen, Biberach Patrician Bertold Hupmann d.Ä and the Knights Ulrich and Halwig of food village. In 1287 Pope Honorius IV took the hospital under his protection. The hospital was initially closely connected to the city, but from a legal point of view it was an independent institution based on a lay brotherhood. In the middle of the 16th century, the hospital recorded 178 sick and dependent people, the same number of children and 15 mentally handicapped people.
The boom in the 14th and 15th centuries was followed by a gradual decline of the institution, which continued into the 19th century. The reasons for the decline lay in the financial exploitation of the hospital by the city, beginning in 1540. After the end of the Thirty Years' War , the hospital is administered equally by both denominations.
In addition to the first-mentioned tasks, other areas of activity, such as school and hospital construction and the general administration of the extensive property of land, buildings, forest and agricultural land, were added over the course of the hospital's eight hundred year history.
In the statutes of 1978, care and care of people in need were placed at the center of the activities of the Hospital of the Holy Spirit.
Today's areas
- The largest area is the Bürgerheim with the offers: open lunch for seniors, day care, respite care, residential care and assisted living.
- Further care for the elderly: The foundation has been running a meeting place for the elderly and an office for the elderly in the Ochsenhauser Hof since 1972
- Childcare : The foundation has been offering childcare places at the community center since 2003 and in the Talfeld district since 2012.
- Forestry: The foundation owns 1652 hectares of mixed forest between the towns of Ringschnait , Burgrieden , Ahlen and Muttensweiler . Between 18,000 and 20,000 solid cubic meters of wood are harvested from this forest each year.
- Land and buildings: The foundation's holdings include such well-known properties as the Schützenkeller, Schützenkellerhalle, Klösterle and the Alte Spital.
- Other: The sponsorship of the Essen on Wheels campaign and the traditional Christkindle lowering on the market square are other areas in which the foundation is active.
