The Sanchez pygmy owl ( Glaucidium sanchezi ) or Tamaulipas pygmy owl is a small species of pygmy owl . The species occurs only in a very small area in southern North America.

Appearance

The Sanchez dwarf owl reaches a body size of about 13 to 16 centimeters. It is therefore not significantly larger than the elf owl , which is considered the smallest representative of the owls. In contrast to many other owl species, it also shows a sexual dimorphism . The males have a gray-brown head, while the females have a rather reddish-brown head. The upper side of the body is olive-brown in both sexes, but the body plumage of the females is also reddish-brown. This species of owl has a few whitish spots on its forehead. The skull is otherwise without a color mark. The eyes are yellow.

In the same distribution area as the Sanchez pygmy owl, the gnome pygmy owl occurs, but it is larger and has a slightly shorter tail in relation to its body size. The ridgway pygmy owl is larger and has a striped skull. The Colima pygmy owl has a much paler plumage color.

Distribution area and habitat

The distribution area of the Sanchez dwarf owl is limited to a small area in northeast Mexico. It occurs from Tamaulipas and the southeast of San Luis Potosí to the north of Hidalgo . It is a resident bird that occurs predominantly in moist subtropical and evergreen forests as well as in pine forests that are interspersed with evergreen deciduous trees. Its height distribution ranges from 900 meters to 2,100 meters above sea level.

Way of life

Like a number of other American pygmy owls, the pygmy owl is partly diurnal. Its food spectrum consists largely of insects and lizards. It also beats other small vertebrates. It mostly breeds in abandoned woodpecker holes. The clutch consists of two to four white eggs.
