description

butterfly

The wingspan of the moth is 25 to 30 millimeters. The upper side of the forewings shows a blue-gray to ash-gray or brown-gray basic color. A few dark spots clearly stand out from the somewhat lightened front edge . The kidney flaw is mostly indistinct, the ring flaw is reduced to a black point. The transverse lines are dark, but mostly indistinct. The undersized upper side of the hind wing is whitish in color and somewhat darkened towards the edge.

egg

The egg has a hemispherical shape, a whitish color and a light brown central spot and a band of the same color. The surface shows up to 30 irregular longitudinal ribs, about half of which reach the micropyl zone . There are also well-developed transverse ribs.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are gray-brown to red-brown in color. The side lines are dark, the stigma and head are black.

Similar species

In the northern areas of occurrence the species is almost unmistakable, in the southern areas it is possible to differentiate it from the externally similar Caradrina species occurring there by means of a genital morphological examination.

Subspecies

The following subspecies are known:

  • Caradrina selini selini Boisduval , 1840
  • Caradrina selini djebli Rungs , 1972

distribution and habitat

The sandstone owl is mostly found locally in Central Europe and the Mediterranean region. The eastern extension extends to the Urals , the southern to the Middle East. The subspecies Caradrina selini djebli lives in Malta . The main habitat of the species are sandy heaths, dry grasslands, rocky heaps as well as pine and mixed forests.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths form two generations per year, which can be found from May to July and, in the south, from August to October. You are flying towards artificial light sources . There is still a need for clarification regarding the food plants of the caterpillars. Successful breeds have been carried out with dandelions . The caterpillars overwinter.

Danger

The sandflat dust owl occurs in different numbers in all German federal states. In Baden-Württemberg it is included in the Red List of Threatened Species on the “Warning List ”.
