The Seligenthal sand pit is an FFH area (identifier DE-5109-303) in the city of Siegburg in the Rhein-Sieg district in North Rhine-Westphalia . It is about 23 hectares of former sand mining complex in a larger mixed forest area. The area is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas and primarily serves to preserve the yellow-bellied toad, which is highly endangered in Germany .

description

The area is located north of the Seligenthal district between Kaldauen and Wahnbachtalsperre on the lower course of the Umschossbach (Ummigsbach). The area of the FFH area also partially belongs to two larger landscape protection areas (LSG 5108-002 and LSG 5010-0001) and is located in the Bergisches Land nature park .

The sandy soils there have long been mined commercially, among other things for use as sand for playgrounds. Today we are interested in free micro-waters that are endangered by increasing forestation.
