Sandow Island is an island off the George V coast in the Australian Antarctic Territory . It belongs to the Mackellar Islands off Cape Cape Denison in the Commonwealth Bay and is east of Haldane Island .
They were discovered by participants in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition (1911–1914) under the direction of the Australian polar explorer Douglas Mawson . The island is named after one of the sled dogs on the research trip. This in turn was named after the German bodybuilder Eugen Sandow (1867-1925), a sponsor of the research trip .
