Sandra Torres married the Social Democrat Álvaro Colom Caballeros in 2002 and took the name Sandra Torres de Colom . In 2008 Álvaro Colom became head of state. As the First Lady of Guatemala, she took on many social programs. She was criticized for the opaque finances of the programs, but the programs also brought her support from the rural poor. In 2011 she herself showed ambitions for the presidency. As close relatives of the president are legally prohibited from running for his successor, the couple divorced in April 2011. However, the Constitutional Court did not allow her to run for the 2011 election .

From January to June 2015 Torres was General Secretary of the social democratic party Unidad Nacional de la Esperanza (UNE). During this time, donations in the millions are said not to have been declared, which is why there were investigations against the UNE. Torres described the allegations as politically motivated.

Torres ran again for the 2019 presidential election and lost to Alejandro Giammattei in the second round of the election .

During her campaign for the 2019 presidential election, Torres enjoyed immunity . On September 2, 2019, she was arrested on charges of violating campaign finance laws.
