Sandy Bay (Gibraltar)
Sandy Bay is a small bay in Gibraltar . It is located on the sparsely populated east side of the Rock of Gibraltar . A road leads from the north via Catalan Bay to Sandy Bay and, since November 2010, again through a tunnel to Europa Point , the southern tip of Gibraltar.
The settlement of Sandy Bay consists practically of a single row of whitewashed houses on the Mediterranean Sea . Large water catchment systems were installed on the evenly sloping sand dune above the village until 2001. The water was collected and stored in bunkers inside the rock. When it was no longer needed, the water catchment system was dismantled by conservationists and the site was returned to its original state. The bush vegetation of the dry Mediterranean areas is found on the dunes.
