The Sandy Bay Road is one of the main streets in Hobart , the capital of the Australian state of Tasmania . It connects the city center with the Channel Highway (B68), a trunk road that connects Hobart with the coast in the south, on the D'Entrecasteaux Canal .

It begins on Davey Street as the southern continuation of Harrington Street and runs south, along the west side of St. Davids Park and past Battery Point . There it swings a short distance to the west and then leads - again to the southeast - down a small hill to Sandy Bay . Along the west bank of the Derwent River and past the Wrest Point Hotel Casino and Sandy Beach , the Sandy Bay Road continues southeast through Lower Sandy Bay . Where the Alexandra Battery stands above Long Beach , it turns south, following the coastline. Then the road climbs to the suburb of Taroona where it merges into the Channel Highway (B68).

history

The Sandy Bay Road was laid out as a driveway in colonial times, at the beginning of the 19th century. Maps and paintings from this period clearly show the road as it follows the west bank of the Derwent River and then turns south. It soon became a wider dirt road and the road was paved at the beginning of the 20th century. When there were trams and trolleybuses in Hobart, a number of lines ran along Sandy Bay Road from downtown to Lower Sandy Bay.
