Trivia

Sange gained notoriety when on the evening of July 2, 2010 a tanker truck overturned while attempting to overtake a bus. Impoverished villagers then tried to collect leaking gasoline in containers. The truck exploded with the glow of a cigarette or after lighting a kerosene lamp, igniting a number of apartment buildings along with the spilled gasoline, as well as the local cinema, where a football game was being broadcast. The disaster claimed 271 lives and injured more than 150 people. Unfortunately, such accidents are common in Africa, as impoverished people draw oil for their own use or for consumption on the black market. A single can of gasoline can bring in as much as several weekly earnings on the black market. The extremely high number of dead and injured was exceptional here.
