Vitus Handschuher , also: Hand (t) schucher (* 1672 ; † December 22, 1703 in Eichstätt ), was a Baroque sculptor in Eichstätt.

life and work

He was probably born in Rain am Lech as the eldest of five children of the Eichstatter sculptor and mayor Christian Handschuher , who came from the Dachau region , and his wife Anna Regina († April 3, 1686). He was probably trained by his father; in any case, he worked in his workshop, in which a large number of baroque statues were created. There are only a few archival records of who created which work. It has been proven that the facade figure of St. Martin at the Eichstätter Spitalkirche and the version of the high altar of this church (around 1700/1703); a little later he died of a “febri maligno”, a malignant fever .
