Uvira is a city on the north bank of Lake Tanganyika in the district of the same name in the Sud-Kivu Province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo . In 2005 Uvira had 170,422 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2005), compared to 74,432 in 1984 according to the census. The city is on the road to Bukavu and Bujumbura . There used to be a sugar factory in Uvira, but it has been bankrupt for several years.

The nearby port of Kalundu ( French Port de Kalundu ) is operated by the Société Nationale des Chemins de fer du Congo and has 2 quays. Each quay is equipped with a derrick crane. There is free and covered storage space in the port. The silting up of the harbor entrance is a permanent problem. The port area ( 3 ° 26 ′ 3.6 ″  S , 29 ° 7 ′ 52.4 ″  E ) is both a border crossing and a customs clearance point .

Uvira is the seat of a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church ( Diocese of Uvira ) and is located in the Archdiocese of Bukavu .

The soccer player Assani Lukimya comes from Uvira .

During floods after rain in April 2020, 3,500 houses were destroyed in the city of Uvira and 24 people, mostly children, were killed in the province of Sud-Kivu.

Uvira district

Uvira is one of the eight districts in Sud-Kivu Province. It borders in the north on the Sud-Kivu district of Walungu, in the east on Burundi and Lake Tanganyika , in the south on the Sud-Kivu district Fizi and in the west on the Sud-Kivu district Mwenga.
