Jeongwol Daeboreum ('Great Full Moon') is a traditional Korean folk festival to celebrate the first full moon of the year. It takes place on the 15th day of the first lunar month. The festival is known under different terms such as Sangwon ( 상원 / 上元 'high beginning') and Ogiil ( 오기 일 / 烏 忌日 'Crows Memorial Day'). In the past, the festival was intended to strengthen the cohesion and solidarity of the community.

Traditional rites

  • Crack nuts ( 부럼 깨기 Bureom kkaegi ). Eating peanuts , walnuts, pine nuts, chestnuts and ginkgo seeds on the morning of the Jeongwol Daeboreum is said to keep you healthy in the New Year.
  • Eating ogok rice ( 오곡밥 ogok-bap ). Ogokbap is eaten with vegetables. Eating and sharing Ogok-bap in the community is said to bring good luck for the New Year.
  • The ritual pyramid fire Daljip taeugi ( 달집 태우기 ) is said to avert disaster and bring about happiness. For this, straw, branches or the like are piled up in a large pyramid and set on fire.
  • For the Jwibulnori ( 쥐불 놀이 ) field fires, straw is piled up on the fields, which is lit everywhere at the same time after sunset. This is to destroy weeds and pests for a good harvest in the new year.
  • With ghost pounding ( 지신 밟기 Jisinbapgi ), farmers move together as a music group ( pungmul ) from house to house and stomp on the ground to summon spirits, the gods of the earth. This is said to bring good luck and in return the farmers receive food and drink from the house owners.
  • The tradition of Gisebae Nori ( 기세배 놀이 ) developed from ghost pounding in the city of Iksan ( North Jeolla ). In this folk tradition, the New Year is greeted with the waving of large flags. Dance groups also perform shamanic rituals.
  • A traditional game of Daeboreum is rope pulling ( 줄다리기 Juldarigi ).
  • Since the word for 'bridge' and 'leg' are the same in Korean , 다리 Dari , crossing bridges on the night of the Daeboreum is said to ensure strong legs.
