Life

After attending primary and secondary school, Sani Souna Sido became a member of the French armed forces in late 1950 . He initially served in Niger and was transferred to Saigon in French Indochina in October 1954 . There he spent 15 months, then half a year in Algeria . He returned to N'Guigmi , Niger , in 1956 and was promoted to adjutant in 1960 . Sido joined the Nigerien Armed Forces when they were founded in 1961. In 1964 he became the military chief of cabinet of President Hamani Diori and commander of the presidential guard. In 1970 he took over the management of the 4th General Staff Office. Sido received the rank of major in 1973 and was appointed deputy chief of staff of the armed forces. The chief of staff at the time was Seyni Kountché .

Seyni Kountché and other officers overthrew President Diori in a military coup on April 15, 1974 . Sani Souna Sido, who was very popular with the armed forces, was brought in as deputy chairman of the Supreme Military Council. The Supreme Military Council, chaired by Kountché, formed the country's new military junta . Sido held various ministerial offices for them. He was Minister of the Interior , Mining and Water Management from April 22, 1974 , Minister of Development, Mining and Water Management from June 8, 1974, and Minister of Mining and Water Management from November 30, 1974 with the honorary rank of Minister of State. Sido quickly turned out to be a serious rival of Kountché, even if the conflict between the two officers was not initially carried out openly. On August 2, 1975, however, Sido was arrested and removed from office. He was accused of instigating a conspiracy against the security of the state together with the Sawaba politician Djibo Bakary .

According to an official communiqué distributed on the state radio ORTN , Sido died in prison on July 11, 1977 of an epileptic fit . In 1991, after the military was disempowered, an investigation into the regime's crimes found that Sido had been executed. Bagnou Beido , a former member of the Supreme Military Council, was arrested and charged with ordering the execution. Beido was released again because he had acted on higher orders.
