The Church of St. Anne in Kallósd is a Romanesque round church from the late 13th century in the village of Kallósd , which is in Zala County in western Hungary . The round church of Kallósd ( Hungarian Kallósdi kerektemplom ) was built as a clan church of a small nobleman under the Árpáden dynasty and was restored in the middle of the 18th century after the Turkish rule ended in 1686 .

history

The former crown estate Kallósd, which belonged to the Mosaburg , was given by the ruler to the sons of Orosz von Komár after 1203, whose grandson, Miklós, the son of Karacs, had the parish church built after 1263. From the 14th century onwards the church belonged to the Kapornak Abbey. In the 17th century, the population fled the village from the attacks of the Turks and the church fell into disrepair. After 1711 the village was repopulated, the church was freed from the thicket and renovated in 1740. The growing population of the village made it necessary to add an anteroom to the church in 1800. This was dismantled during the restoration by the monument office between 1989 and 1993, so that the church was given its original round church shape.

architecture

The Saint Anne Church is one of a series of round churches that emerged in Eastern Europe with Christianization in the 10th and 11th centuries. In Hungary the round churches of Öskü and Szalonna have been preserved. In addition, there are the special forms of a round church with a room division as a six-pass (six- conch system) in Karcsa and Kiszombor (all from the 11th century).

On the stone foundation of the Romanesque church stand brick walls, which are closed by a bell-shaped roof made of slabs. A lower, semicircular apse adjoins the round church on the eastern side . The facade of the church is structured by pilaster strips (narrow and slightly protruding vertical reinforcements of the wall). There are arched windows in the wall panels next to the entrance on the southwest side. The circular floor plan, the pilaster strips, the cornice, the semicircular apse and the dome are evidence of a Romanesque monument that was built in the middle of the 13th century.

use

In the 1990s, a new church was built next to the bell tower in the center of the village. In the round church in the cemetery, which is on the hill south of the village, masses are only read on special occasions and concerts are held in the summer from July to August. As a landmark of Kallósd, the round church can be recognized on the coat of arms of the village.
