The oldest church in Isfahan |
The St. Mary's Church is a historical Armenian Apostolic Church in the Iranian city of Isfahan .
history
In the 17th century, the Armenians in the Julfa district had only one small church, the Hakup Church. This was the oldest in the district. The increase in the Armenian population in Isfahan resulted in a lack of space. Decorations were not included. Because of the lack of space himself, Chadsche Avdik , an important merchant of silk products during the Abbas I era , decided to build another church. He also decorated them with lights, gold and silver chandeliers , valuable canvases and paintings . He built the church on his own account and named it the Sankt-Marien-Kirche. Chadsche Avdik was buried in the church after his death. Two large paintings, works by Venetian artists , were also brought into the church after they had been bought by an Armenian merchant in Europe and given to the church.
