The Sankt Johannes Chorknaben was founded in 1960 as a boys' schola by chaplain Bernhard Reck, senior teacher Karl Schmid took over the management. Today the choir is a member of the international Pueri Cantores movement . In 1966 Hugo Birkhofer took over the management as a student. In the last few years, Volker Braig, a trained school and church musician with an A-exam, who has grown up as a choir member, has joined him. On June 28th, 2009, Hugo Birkhofer was officially bid farewell after 43 years as a choir director as part of the church patronage service. His successor was Volker Braig, who had grown up in the choir.
Building witnesses in the parish church of Bad Saulgau from the 15th century indicate that boys were already performing choir services in the Middle Ages.
Over the years the number of members grew so that the choir was soon expanded to a four-part choir with over 100 members. According to the English tradition, young male voices form the altus . Tenor and bass are traditionally provided by men.

The liturgical service at the parish church of St. John - especially at Christmas and Easter - is the most important task of the choir. The program always includes motets from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, works from the Classical and Romantic periods, as well as from the 20th century and Gregorian chant . Works by Johann Sebastian Bach - repeats the Christmas Oratorio , the St. John Passion , the Magnificat and various motets - and Georg Friedrich Handel , The Creation and the Great Masses by Joseph Haydn and choral works by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart - including the Requiem and the Masses - belong to the repertoire of the choirboys.
The choir has been playing with Ensemble La Banda , an orchestra with historical instruments , for 10 years , and several CDs have already been produced.
The choir organizes concert tours in the surrounding area, but also abroad - including Rome in 2007 and 2016.

The children are not housed in a boarding school, but live at home. The choir direction is supported by three voice trainers and several choir members who help with organization and training.
A development association with 220 members manages the finances, makes the contracts, procures grants and donations and organizes important activities.
