The Chapel of Sant'Antonio Abate is a former monastery church and today's Roman Catholic chapel in Astano in the canton of Ticino in Switzerland . It is consecrated to Saint Anthony the Great . The medieval building forms the original, historical center of Astano, is therefore part of a place worthy of protection of national importance and is a listed building .

history

The sacred building served as a monastery church for the Humiliate monastery , which had existed in Astano since the 13th century and was abandoned in the second half of the 15th century . Today's chapel is of late medieval origin and is the oldest preserved sacred building in the community. In the years 1879–1888, the building was also used as a kindergarten . From 1989 onwards, extensive restoration work was carried out under the architect Alberto Finzi, which was completed with the reopening of the chapel on June 2, 1991.

Building description

The chapel is a rectangular building with an open wooden roof. In the choir there is a wall painting by Pietro Lozzio from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, showing the saint of the title . Another painting from the 18th century shows the crucifixion of Jesus of Nazareth and poor souls .
