Sant Miquel de Colera

Sant Miquel de Colera is a former Romanesque parish church from the 11th century in the municipality of Colera in northern Catalonia ( province of Girona , Alt Empordà ). The church forms part of the cultural heritage of Catalonia and is included in the Inventari del Patrimoni Arquitectònic Català .

location

The church of a former hermitage named after Saint Michael is located 4 kilometers west-southwest (as the crow flies) from the center of Colera at 497 meters above sea level. It can be reached via a 7 km long forest path that leads through the dilapidated hamlet of Molinàs . Sant Miquel de Colera is located on the eastern slope of the Serra de la Balmeta 700 meters north of the Puig d'Esquers .

history

Sant Miquel de Colera is mentioned for the first time in a document from the last quarter of the 11th century. It states that

"Dalmau Berenguer" ipsa sua domenedura propia "had received the place Colera in the Vall de Freixe (as Colera was then called) as a fief from the Abbey of Sant Quirze de Colera - together with farms and their lands, vineyards with watchtowers (turre), ports as well the Church of Sant Miquel with its land, tithes and privileges. "

An even earlier document from the Abbey of Sant Quirze from the year 844, in which the church of Sant Miquel is mentioned, is now regarded by many historians as a forgery of the 13th century.

A note from 1219 listed Sant Miquel de Colera, the so-called l'església vella, as the property of Sant Quirze Abbey. This was also confirmed again by the Rationes decimarum of 1279 and 1280 and the diocesan records of the 14th century.

In 1983 the church was badly damaged and called for intervention by the Departement de Cultura (cultural authority of the Generalitat de Catalunya ), the Diputació de Girona , the Ajuntament de Colera and the diocese of Girona. Together with the Amics de Sant Miquel de Colera , the church was restored in two stages, a first in 1983 and a second in 1991. The facade was renewed, the bell wall repaired and the missing portal stones replaced.

description

Sant Miquel de Colera (Colera - Alt Empordà) (3) .jpg

The only slightly from the east-west direction to the north twisted hall church consists of a single ship, on the east side of a semi-circular apse is completed. The entrance is on the south side. The ceiling inside is a pointed barrel vault. The ceiling of the apse, on the other hand, is quarter-spherical. The church has only two windows, one at the front and one in the middle of the presbytery . The windows are closed off by two stepped round arches. In the north wall there was once a large niche-shaped arch, which was accompanied by a square opening - both are now walled up. With the exception of the apse, a bench runs around the entire interior of the church.

The floor inside is covered with large slabs of the slate rock of the Albères massif . The entrance door on the south side is closed off by four stepped round arches sitting above the lintel and the tympanum field. The bell gable enthroned above the west facade consists of three pillars, which, as in Sant Quirze, lack the final arches. The church is built in natural stone, the stones were hewn and then built one behind the other. The roof is covered with slate.
