Santa Maria is a Portuguese place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) in the district ( concelho ) of Estremoz with 6,321 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011). It is a place and a former municipality and together with Santo André forms the urban area of ​​Estremoz.

Many of the main attractions of the city of Estremoz are in the municipality of Santa Maria, including the castle. The historic town center, which is a listed building as a whole, is also located here.

Since the local elections in Portugal in 2009, Santa Maria has not been ruled by one of the major parties, but by the MiETZ citizens' list - Movimento independente por Estremoz ( Portuguese for: Independent Movement for Estremoz).

On September 29, 2013, the parishes of Estremoz (Santa Maria) and Estremoz (Santo André) were merged to form the new parish União das Freguesias de Estremoz (Santa Maria e Santo André) . Estremoz (Santa Maria) is the seat of this newly formed community.
