Santa Maria Maggiore (Guardiagrele)
Santa Maria Maggiore is the main church in the Italian town of Guardiagrele .
The building originally dates from the 12th century , but shows the styles of different eras of its existence.
One of the reasons for this is that the main building was badly damaged in a fire. It so happens that the main tower and the cloister have Romanesque and early Gothic elements, while the interior of the main choir was renovated in the Baroque style after the fire . The most impressive object from this period is the wooden pulpit in the nave . Also in the cloister on the north side of the nave you can find a baroque stucco ceiling and the fresco Madonna del Latte under one of the arches .
Under the portico on the south wall of the church (Largo Cristoforo) there is a fresco from 1473 by Andrea de Litio.
In the church there is also the Cathedral Museum, which, among other things, exhibits a cross made by Nicola da Guardiagrele in 1431 .
