Santa Maria Maior is a place and a former municipality ( freguesia ) of the Vila Viana do Castelo in the northern Portuguese district of Viana do Castelo in the Minho-Lima sub-region .

The community had 10,623 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).

On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Viana do Castelo (Santa Maria Maior), Viana do Castelo (Monserrate) and Meadela were merged to form the new municipality União das Freguesias de Viana do Castelo (Santa Maria Maior e Monserrate) e Meadela . Viana do Castelo (Santa Maria Maior) is the seat of this newly formed municipality.
