Santa Maria della Pietà (Venice)
Santa Maria della Pietà , also called Santa Maria della Visitazione or La Pietà for short , is a church in Venice , in the Sestiere Castello on the Riva degli Schiavoni.
history
The Ospedale della Pietà , which was founded in 1346 and was also an orphanage for girls, received an attached oratory in the 15th century. In the 18th century this was in a poor structural condition, so that a new building was decided in 1730. This new building, financed by a lottery , was entrusted to Giorgio Massari . He planned a three-part complex oriented towards the Riva degli Schiavoni based on the model of the citelle on the opposite side of the Giudecca Canal. The church was to be flanked by two four-story buildings of the ospedale. Construction of the church did not begin until 1745. The right part of the ospedale and the facade were not realized, probably for cost reasons. The front was not completed until 1902, and efforts were made to emulate Massari's design. Antonio Vivaldi worked at the Ospedale della Pietà with the famous orphan girl orchestra from 1703 to 1716 - not in this church, but in the previous building, which stood where the Hotel Metropole is today.
inner space
The room, structured by double pilasters and built over an oval floor plan, with four side altars, ends in a domed presbytery . The church is one of the most elegant late baroque ensembles in the city. Giovanni Battista Tiepolo created the ceiling paintings of the hall from 1754–1755: allegories of strength and peace above the entrance, the triumph of faith in the main field of the vault and finally the Assumption of Mary into heaven . The figures on the main altar ( Peter , Markus , Gabriel and Michael ) are attributed to Giovanni Marchori and Giovanni Maria Morlaiter . The altarpiece ( Annunciation ) is by Giovanni Battista Piazzetta . The room's excellent acoustics are still used today for musical performances.
