The church of Santa Maria in Monte Santo in Rome is one of the famous twin churches built between 1662 and 1679 on the Piazza del Popolo . The architects of the building to the east of Via del Corso were - as was the case later for the sister church Santa Maria dei Miracoli to the west - Carlo Rainaldi , Carlo Fontana and Gian Lorenzo Bernini . The idea of building the two almost identical St. Mary's Churches at the beginning of the Corso starting from the Piazza del Popolo could have come from Pope Alexander VII himself.

In contrast to the round building of Santa Maria del Miracolo, the church of Santa Maria in Monte Santo was designed as a domed central building with an oval floor plan. As with their counterpart, the main portal facing the square is presented with a temple-like portico . The low campanile on the front facing the Corso is considerably more elaborate than its counterpart . From the facilities of the main altar is Mattia de Rossi and by Carlo Maratta created altarpiece of the third chapel worth left.

The church has had the title of minor basilica since 1825 . In this church, Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, later Pope John XXIII. , ordained a priest on August 10, 1904.
