Santa Maria dei Miracoli (Rome)
Santa Maria dei Miracoli ( Latin : Sanctae Mariae Miracolorum ) is a Roman Catholic church in Rome . It is one of the famous twin churches built between 1662 and 1679 on the Piazza del Popolo . The architects of the building west of Via del Corso were - as was the case with the sister church Santa Maria in Montesanto to the east - Carlo Rainaldi , Carlo Fontana and Gian Lorenzo Bernini . Pope Alexander VII may have suggested the construction of the church, which contributed to the urban design of the important square at the northern entrance to the city.
In contrast to Santa Maria in Montesanto with its oval floor plan, Santa Maria dei Miracoli is a round building. As with their counterpart, the main portal facing the square is presented with a temple-like portico . Of the furnishings , the grave monuments of the Cardinal and Count Gastaldi located on the side of the choir are worth mentioning; they were designed by Fontana, the statues are by Antonio Raggi . The cardinal family was one of the most influential sponsors of the building.
