history

Beginnings

In December 1917 the businessmen Charlie G. Fichardt, Willie A. Hofmeyr, Charlie R. Louw, Pieter A. Malan, Fred H. Dormehl, Antoon F. Benning (all South Africans) and the Scot Alfred McDowell met in Cape Town for the Discuss starting an insurance company. This was registered as Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Trust en Assuransie Maatskappij (South African National Trust and Insurance Company), Santam , on March 28, 1918. The life insurance division was spun off into an independent company to ensure that long-term profits for policyholders and short-term profits for shareholders were separated. Sanlam was registered as Suid-Afrikaanse Nasionale Lewens Assuransie Maatskappij Beperk (South African National Life Insurance Company) on June 9, 1918 , the parent company Santam focused on short-term insurance.

20th century

During the Depression after the Second Boer War and the Spanish flu , Sanlam struggled with problems and generated only small surpluses in the first few years, with the main income coming from rural areas before increased activity in cities in the late 1920s. After the Second World War, Sanlam expanded its business areas and continued to grow. The long-time chairman MS Louw changed to the management of the South African state enterprise Industrial Development Corporation . In 1953, the number of employees at Sanlam was around 800.

In 1954 the company was converted into a mutual insurance company. The company became one of the largest South African insurance companies at the end of the 20th century. In 1998 it was demutualized into a stock corporation and listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and the Namibia Stock Exchange .

After 2000

Sanlam was integrated into the BEE policy concept. In 2004, Ubuntu-Botho Investments, led by Patrice Motsepe , took over 10 percent of Sanlam as part of a BEE transaction. In 2006 the company acquired shares in several companies and expanded its activities to include the provision of financial services for the entry-level segment. In 2007, the inflow of business exceeded 100 billion South African rand for the first time in the company's history . Sanlam is expanding its business to Asia, where in 2012 26 percent of the Indian Shriram Group was bought, and life insurance was taken over in Malaysia and Indonesia .
