Santander miniature squirrel tooth formula

The animals have as other species of the genus in the upper jaw half per one to a incisor tooth formed incisor (incisor) to which a tooth gap ( diastema follows). This is followed by two premolars and three molars . In contrast, the animals have only one premolar in the lower jaw. In total, the animals have a set of 22 teeth. The second premolar (PM3) is absent especially in some populations of the Amazonian dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus flaviventer ), in the other species it is very small.

distribution

The Santander dwarf squirrel is endemic to Colombia , where it is found exclusively in the Departamento de Santander and probably also in the surrounding departments between the Río Magdalena and the Cordillera Oriental, the eastern chain of the Andes to the Cordillera Occidental in the west. The altitude distribution ranges from 100 to 1000 meters, but the animals were also found at altitudes of 2700 to 3800 meters.

Way of life

The Santander dwarf squirrel lives in mountain forests and in swamp areas of the range. Very little is known about the way of life. It is diurnal and likely feeds on insects and other invertebrates.

Systematics

The Santander dwarf squirrel is classified as an independent species within the genus of the New World dwarf squirrel ( Microsciurus ), which consists of four species. The first scientific description comes from Hernandez-Camacho from 1957, who described the species as a subspecies of the Colombian squirrel as Sciurus pucheranii santanderensis based on individuals from the Meseta de los Caballeros northeast of La Albania in the Department of Santander . In 1960, Hernandez-Camacho classified the species under the genus Microsciurus .

Apart from the nominate form, no further subspecies are distinguished within the species .

Status, threat and protection

The Santander dwarf squirrel is classified by the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) as “data deficient” due to insufficient data on the stocks.
