Santi Urbano e Lorenzo a Prima Porta is the name of two neighboring churches. The older one is connected to the Prima Porta gate , which gave the whole district, Z.LVIII, its name. The new church dates from the 20th century and was built right next to it.

history

The old church was built in the 12th century and was dedicated to Saint Lawrence. Armellini reports in a Vatican archive document:

At the beginning of the 17th century the church was renovated and expanded by Pope Urban VIII and Saint Urban was added as the church's patron . Urban VIII founded the parish on March 7, 1629 by decree and assigned it to the diocese of Porto Santa Rufina . On January 5, 1945 the parish was assigned to the diocese of Rome .

Due to the large population growth, a new church was built right next to it in 1971 by Giorgio Pacini. The two churches are connected and the old church is now the weekday chapel.

On November 26, 1994, Pope John Paul II elevated the church to title diaconia.

The parish has been looked after by the Paulines since 2005.
