Santo Sepolcro (Pisa)
Santo Sepolcro ( Holy Sepulcher ) is a Romanesque church in the Tuscan city of Pisa in Italy .
history
The oldest documented mention of the church comes from the year 1113. It was built by the builder Diotisalvi in the 12th century for the local Johanniter as a central building based on the model of the Jerusalem Church of the Holy Sepulcher . The octagonal outer plan of the building around the inner rotunda also shows parallels to the Jerusalem Dome of the Rock , which has been in Christian hands since the city was conquered by the Crusaders in 1099. Relics were given to the church by Archbishop Dagobert of Pisa , later Patriarch of Jerusalem .
In 1720 the church was redesigned in baroque style. In the 19th century, these measures and a surrounding Renaissance arcade were removed.
